Outliner and conponents question, part 2
-
In a model I created "Sleeping Module-1". I made an indentical copy of sleeping module-1 and named it "Sleeping Module-2". In the outliner, the entity info definition name is listed as "<Sleeping module-1, roof panel group-28> for both modules. It will not allow me, using entity info, to change the name of one of the modules to sleeping module-2. The modules are listed as groups, with the items listed under the groups as conponents. What am I missing? Thanks for your help, Bob

I t would be so much easier to help you if I could see your SKP file.
You say you changed the name of the copy to Sleeping Module-2. Is that a component? A group? It sounds like you have a nested group. What are you trying to change the name of?

"Sleeping area module-1, main roof skylight group-28" is a group with nested conponents. I have made an indentical copy of module-1 and wish to change the group definition from module-1 to module-2. I am trying to create two individual groups; so that I can make changes to one group without effecting the other group. I changed the definition name in the entity info window to -2. But both groups are still listed as -1 groups in the outliner window. The reason that I am after is, " why can't I change the definition name from module-1 to module-2, even though they are identical groups? Bob

Bob,
Seeing a file with both Groups would help others in figuring out what is going on. It sounds though that you are talking about Components and the difference is important regarding uniqueness as well as in discussion.
From what you are saying I would not expect that result. Still, when I wish to make a component unique, I right-click and choose Make Unique from the context menu. I either take the name assigned (such as "#2" suffix)or type in a new one AFTER making "unique".
If they ARE groups you can change one without changing the other. You don't have to rename either. However if you edit any of the nested component other copies of those components will change.

I thought that "unique" applied only to conponents. But it seems to apply also to groups.
So, if I select "make unique", then I can change the definition name for the group. At least it works for me.Thanks again for your help, Bob

Maybe I was unclear. "Make Unique" only applies to Components--when you have more than one copy in the model. So if you are discussing Groups, then so be it. For Groups it doesn't matter what you name them, you can change them whenever you like. They aren't linked the way components are, so therefore don't need to be made "unique" or renamed to change independently.
I don't know why you are having a problem renaming your group. It "should" work...that's all I can say without further information.

As Peter said, if what you are making are groups, you can edit one without affecting other copies no matter what the name is. You won't get an option for Make Unique if the thing you have selected is a group. That's a component thing only.
I just made a test file and had no problem changing the name of a copy of a nested group to something else. Are you trying to type the new name in Outliner or in Entity Info? You can't do it in Outliner so if that's where you are trying to do it, it's no wonder it doesn't work.
If that's not it, you'll have to provide more information. The SKP file, screenshots, something.
