I design fixtures, displays and island kiosks for malls.
I have been contemplating an idea for a tool enhancement that would potentially take several steps out of the workflow. Basically it's a "superguide".

For instance, I may start with a cabinet base or a side panel. The dimensions often are somewhat undetermined. At this point the shape may or may not be 3D. In the corse of working I may place a guide down the center of the surface and continue the design or edit outwardly from there, I like to work from the center whenever possible.

In the case of a 2D form and as easy as it is to move a line, if in the same step I could extend a side by axis or trim the shape (2D or 3D) just by dragging a modified guide from the guide I use as a centerline, that would be great.

The guide would act like a buzz saw in most cases, potentially scaling by axis when the shape is smaller than the drag distance of the guide.

      Does that sound logical?
Is there a tool available like this?

      Thank you

      Kevin

        Hi nestednode,

english is not my native language. Maybe that's the reason that I do not exactly understand what you want to have. Maybe you could give us a small sample in a SketchUp drawing.

Like Charly, I would like to see an example or examples of what you're talking about doing. From what I can decipher, you can do at least most of the stuff you're asking for with native tools.

Sure. Charley and Dave I am attaching a image view 1 shows the center line through the center of a 3D shape.
#2 shows the Idea, by dragging a guide that is designed to cut the geometry is instantly updated, no push pull no further editing or use of existing tools required.

The attached image shows the desired effect.

            Thanks

Frankly this sounds like a case of needing to learn to use the tools you have available. If you really must have a plugin, look at Zorro 2.

Well Zorro2 is close, it's more complicated.
I was thinking If you could do a cut or scale for that matter, with just a guide that would be fast and simple.
And I am literally talking about squares and rectangles nothing so involved as architecture or engineering.

I understand It's not that hard to use the excellent tools provided.

I will try out Zorro, I really like it thanks.

Nestednode, how do you orbit around in the model? Do you click on the orbit icon, or do you have a shortcut key to the orbit tool, or do you use some other technique? Just curious, thanks,

Like, middle mouse button (scroll wheel) - which IMO is the fastest way to orbit.
