I have been looking at the various instructions on using layers in SketchUp 8 but I cannot get my screen to look like the ones shown in all the examples. All I can get shown is a simple window that shows "layout 0". Also looking at other models I can get a list of the components but not the screen allowing me to manipulate them.

Can You see what I am doing wrong?
      Thank You
      Jim

        Hi, Jim:
Is there any chance you could provide a couple of screen captures to show what you mean? You used the word layout there. Do you mean the application Layout for Sketchup, or is this simply a term you are using for the layer?

I take the slow, deliberate approach in my aimless wandering.

Sorry. I should have said layers. Could you tell me how to do a screen shot?

There are many little applications you can use for taking screenshots. I for instance use Gadwin PrintScreen (there's a "Pro" - pay - edition and the one that does not say "Pro" is a free version):
            http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/

Good thing is that you can set a delay. This is useful when you need to take a screenshot where you have to use a modifier key (like Shift or Ctrl) with a tool but that would modify the key to take the PrintScreen, too.

So in this case I set a 1-2 second delay, press the PrintScreen button and quickly do whatever is needed in SU and at the set time, the screenshot is taken.

            Gai...

I think the first place to start is here followed by this and then this. Perhaps you'll also find this and this helpful as far as manipulating your components is concerned.

Thanks for your kind help. I have the Gladwin program running and am getting familiar with it.

I have studied the tutorials suggested and think I now understand this feature but somehow I am missing being able to get the layer management screen up. Going to Windows, Layers and clicking on Layers nothing happens. To the right of this selection is a short dash All seems clear to me but somehow I am missing something!
                Thanks for sticking with me.

If you are seeing the dash before Layers in the Window menu, it indicates you've got the Layers title bar someplace but perhaps it is hiding behind a floating toolbar or off screen.

When the Layers manager is open for use there should be a check mark instead of the dash.

Do you sometimes use two monitors? Perhaps the Layers manager is off to one side. If you are comfortable editing the registry you could look under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Google/SketchUp8 and find "SnappyLayers." Select it, right click on it and choose Delete. Then close the Registry Editor. Reopen SketchUp and select the Layers Manager again from the Window menu.

GREAT! You were correct, I do use a second monitor sometimes and that's where it was! You know , I tried to learn SketchUp when it was first released but I would encounter areas I could not understand and finally gave up. Now,the ability to ask a question and get help is super. Thanks to you both.

The tutorials available now are also a wonderful learning tool.
