Looks like a gray rat snake...

1 Gray rat snakes are one of the longest snakes in North America, reaching lengths of up to 8 feet.
2 When threatened, rat snakes can "rattle" their tail, fooling other animals into believing they are venomous.
3 Like pythons and boas, rat snakes are constrictors, which suffocate/squash their prey.
4 Gray rat snakes are often found in trees, hiding in crevices or searching for food.
5 Unlike other rat snakes, gray rat snakes retain their juvenile coloration (speckled pattern) as adults.

Still I think it's better off dead when next to your home !
Unless of course you have a plague of rats ??? πŸ˜’

Its what we call down here in the south, a king snake, supposedly they eat other snakes as well as mice.

Looks like a rat snake to me, too. Pity it got killed, but if a snake were a threat to me it would get sent to the sunny-rock mouse-laden snake heaven in the sky pretty quickly. Too bad they're difficult to ID quickly, don't want to get bit while trying to decide if it's a non-venomous snake or not.

              Good work! πŸ˜†

Remember even if you cut the head off it can still get you. They really don't die 'til the sun goes down! Watch out!
