Here's a closeup render of a herringbone floor experiment. The render is quick and dirty just to get an idea. does it look believable? There are 24 different tiles all made from the same "board". I tried to place them somewhat randomly so the identical ones wouldn't be too obvious. The "board is over 9 feet long and more than 12 inches wide so there's a large variation in grain across it.

Does it play alright? Or is there too much repetitiveness? I could use three or four more boards from the same log and get even more variation.

Looks very good to me. We have Brazilian Cherry floors in out house and the boards have a very large range of grains and colors. Often the "next door neighbor" to a board is not what I would have chosen, but that's what makes wood floors so interesting.

I had a very difficult time finding any repetition. Looks like a photograph 👍

            Thank you, gentlemen.

Bob we have maple flooring in our kitchen and dining room. We went with a second grade of maple so there would be some character in the floor. Some friends of ours but in a first grade of maple and it all looks the same to me. I like our floor better. We've got birdseye, tiger and ribbon-grained pieces. Very pretty that way.

              Hi Dave,
I am very interested in how you can make beautiful wooden floors as your Dave. You can give directions on how you did it?
              thanks

                I can probably do that.

Here's a tutorial on how I made the floor in SketchUp.
