From paper sketch to full lathe model help please
-
Hi,
I'm a newbie to Sketchup.
I believe I can present my ideas by digitizing them cheaper and quicker, so that the customer can get a better idea about the sample than a 2d sketch.
I'm interested in making full lathe models from my 2d sketches.
I started centering (on grid) all the drawings that I scanned.
Next I imported some into Sketchup.to be save I made my sketch a component...
Then according to some of the tutorials I should be able to select the edge of the circle, select the follow me tool and then hover over my design, then CLICK, and it should be done...
However, the follow me tool, does not recognize my design (even though I traced it and it shows a full surface)...
Can somebody give me a tip, how I can undo the component function or how I can get my lathe modeling to work.
Thank you
JP

If the faces are inside a component [or group] FollowMe won't work unless the path [circle etc] is inside the same context...
So may I suggest you Edit>Cut the circle-part [or Edit>Copy it if you want to reuse the path later], then edit the face's container [double-click]... then use Edit>PasteInPlace.
This then puts the face and path into the same context.
Select the path, then FollowMe and pick the face.
It should now make the lathed forms...
Alternatively explode the face container so that its geometry merges with the path's context - however this then compromises the path and no longer keeps the geometry in well separated sets - having some geometry unexpectedly sticking together is a pain, so I recommend the first option of making the path inside the face's container... -
the copy option did not work, the exploding worked, then with some tweaks I got my shape.
thank you
now I can focus on the finishes
