SketchUcation Member's NETWORK?
-
Hi All,
Back in the SketchUp / @Last days I started the SketchUp Mugshot Gallery. At the time we had quite a few members in the gallery and it helped to 'put a name to the face / avatar', so to speak. The Mugshot Gallery was posted on the forums for all to view.
I've just had a chat with Rich O'Brien today and bounced the idea of possibly doing something similar here on SketchUcation BUT with a difference.
The new mugshot gallery, or whatever we eventually call it, would ONLY be accessible to genuine participating members. Under the each member's mugshot would be his / her real name, contact details and their field of expertise / interest. Rich suggested the whole thing could be along the lines of an internal Linkedin type set up!
What is the point? Well there are a number! The main one is that it would offer interested members the opportunity to network with other genuine members and who knows what could lead from there
I would of course be doing a certain amount of vetting to make sure that only genuine members are allowed into the Network, giving accurate information about themselves which in turn would be shared with like minded members.
I would highly value any thoughts you may have on this idea.
Mike

Sounds like a good plan. It may create an internal referral network for work, trade or expertise. The only drawback I would see by making it private is that it would prevent external employers or those seeking expertise from easily finding those that have those skills, but the solution to that is a simple forum post requesting said info.
-
+1 I think it would be worthwhile.
As for external parties having access - many members already have websites that can be found from here - thus I would be in favor of stricter privacy. I would be more hesitant to post info if I knew it were more widely accessible. Already getting enough spam through regular channels...
-
Thanks Andy for commenting. Yes, I agree, there would be a strong requirement for privacy. This is where a stringent vetting system would come into play.
Based on your concerns, I think there should also some simple rules put in place regarding the way other member's contacts could be used.

Guys, Sorry about my typo, 'rear' instead of 'real' or surname. I have corrected this typo and deleted the comments in relation to this as I want to keep this on-topic.
I think there is no point in having a Private Network unless all members of this network disclose their full details. If a SCF member does not wish to do this that is their prerogative, they simple pass on the Network.

I'm down for it... sounds good. My only concern would be keeping the communication within the website to protect from spamming. no direct e-mail. but what does it really matter now... I get $#!t load of spam every day anyway.
-
Kris,
Good to hear that. As I will be vetting the applicants I wouldn't worry about spanners getting past us .... especially Csaba .... the Spammer's worst enemy
-
Mate I think it's a GREAT idea, anything that connects this great community is worthy of implementation IMHO!

Here you can see the "contributors" to the Stop Forum Spam database - sketchucation is there with a nice number (the numbers only show activity in the last year) http://www.stopforumspam.com/contributors
It is now rather low though. It seems that a very simple trick I applied at registration is stopping bots from registering so only "humans" get through (but we still have a couple of them daily)

Well, to be clear, I was thinking specifically of unsolicited advertising. I get a steady stream of emails from Chinese rendering companies, website "SEO" companies, etc. to my work email. It's more in that vein that I would imagine someone looking to drum up business would love to have an email list like this to send unsolicited adverts. The pharma spam and fedex delivery notice spam is pretty easy to filter out.
-
Yes Andy, as you say unsolicited adverts can be a problem but most email systems now have excellent filter systems. I do my filtering without even thinking about it these days. Also, there are some unsolicited adverts that I have found of interest so on balance I think I am about even.
If a member is uncomfortable about disclosing their email to other members in the Network, well its not for them plain and simple. So there is really not much point in raising the issue here as nothing much can be done about advertisers, they are a fact of life.
I should explain a little more about why I started this thread. Over the past 12 months since CATCHUP came into existence I have been getting a steady stream of SCF members seeking work and providing their details to me . I think the setting up of a SketchUcation NETWORK might address their immediate need, that being to get some exposure.
The idea is only in its infancy and may or may not be a running for us. However I think there would be substantial number of members that would subscribe willingly.
In my experience the bottom line as far as exposure is concerned is, if you put yourself out there, you should expect reaction both good and bad.
-
hehe, don't mind me too much, just being a bit critical I guess. Indeed, it is up to those interested to participate or not. I'm sure you all can find a good balance between exposure and a measure of control over the info.
-
Sounds good to me too...ditto what Richard wrote!
-
I am all for it, mike. and I am sure you will make sure all protective measures are taken.
-
Thanks guys for the vote of confidence. I am working on a system that hopefully would work. If we implement, it will probably be in the new site ..... coming soon (as they say )
-
Always interested in trusted relations and to enlarge my network with people that could share my interests, so I'll be in if it's done !
Good idea !
-
I think this is a great idea. Finding good sources of help with projects is tough enough, but having this network will certainly be a good pool to choose from.
-
Book me a spot, Mike. A shot of my melon will give you all a laugh.....

I am not so active a participant as I would like to be, but this idea sounds really nice
