How many hours do you work
-
I dont come to the corner bar often but I thought I might ask this question:how many hours do you work a day?
Myself and my brother have a small business, started 6 years ago.Prior to that we worked for over 10 years for a large international company.Times have been tough over the last 4 years, but for the last 6 months,we have been rediculously busy.
At one stage we were working on fit-out jobs in moscow,co-inciding with 3d modelling in the eastern USA.
The result was, being based in Ireland,I was in my office at 5am to conference call our clients in Moscow, working on that job, then working an 8 hour day from 9am for our Irish clients, and following that,a conference call with our USA clients, and then finding time to deal with the moscow work.18 hours would be average. Please dont get me wrong,Im not complaining,we will take all work available, and as any self employed person would know, time off dosen't exist, but I would be very intersted in finding out how other people do it.

9-6
or around 7- 7.5 hrs total after breaks/lunchdo any more than that and the law of diminishing returns starts kicking in for the crew (carpenters)
(ie- you have to do a 12 hr day to get 10 hrs worth etc) -
I'm doing around 45-50 a week at my full time gig, supporting 3 designers and handling all the visualization and marketing tasks. (This is our busy season) Also working freelance another 10-15 per week with another dozen spent on product development stuff. That's just the bill pay work. The real work is out in the yard managing my 12 acre property and working in my gardens. Desperately longing for more 3D play time, but the family comes first. Free time is usually spent reading, writing and researching.

Er what do you do Adam? I thought you were in landscape design, you know, and built stuff.
Sounds fascinating.I am hardly working at all right now. Building and design business just fell apart around here. But next week I have a couple new projects that look good.

40 to 45 hours a week at my day job and then I come home and get to drawing. Probably another 15 to 25 hours a week on that.

28 hours a day... 8 days a week... 40 days a month... 400 days a year.

I'm self-employed, 10 hrs per weekday is normal. Of those 10, usually only 7 will be chargeable if I'm lucky. The rest goes on quotes, bookwork, maintenence and learning.
I try to keep weekends free mostly for swmbo and sailing and the bloody garden.
My preference, when the work comes in, is to go for it doing 12/15 hr days, and then have a couple of days off to do other stuff.
