Separating "Sticky Geometry"
-
Hello. I am working with a model of a bridge that I did not build. I want be be able to "cut" and remove individual pieces but the pieces are not groups or components. Whenever I move a piece, the neighboring pieces stay attached and are stretched along with the piece want to move.
Does anyone have some pointers oh how I could completely separate these pieces? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Select what you want to move and make it a group/component immediately. Then move. Sounds "obvious" but certainly I know what a pain this can be with such a model. Still the best (or better to say only) way to deal with geometry like this.

I'll add that if the geometry you've selected is touching geometry that is not selected, you'll need to manually tick the box for Replace selection with component when you make the component. That box is normally ticked automatically when all touching geometry is selected.

Thanks! That is helpful. Although, some of the pieces are only faces (haven't been extruded into a solid). It appears that you can not make faces components. Any suggestions for dealing with these types?

Sure. You can make single faces into components. Double click on the face with the Select tool to get it and its bounding edges and hit the G key to "Create component."
For something like a bridge I would look to see what parts are the same (or mirrored counterparts) and then make one component and copy it as needed so you don't have to do the whole thing.

Sigh, Dave...
Never mine, here is mine, too.

You can - just double click to include the perimeter edges, too.Long:
The right click command will not let you make a single entity (like one face or one edge) into a group/component. But the Edit menu item will. However you also want to include those edges anyway (they would be auto created otherwise but you would be left with the standalone edges in the model later) -
Sorry Csaba.

Thanks guy. I think I got it!
