Model properly displays in SU8, broken in G. Earth? [SOLVED]
-
Good evening,
I am undergoing trouble exporting a model to Google Earth. The model is displayed correctly in SketchUp 8.0, but trying to export it to Google Earth 5.1 shows a bunch of black polygons climbing up in the sky for a few kilometers. I have tried copying just the model to a new .skp document with no geolocalization nor the hidden geometry with no luck. The model is attached with the post.
Any clues on what's going? Thank you very much in advance.

It exports fine for me - however there are some other issues; the whole stadium is a bit smaller than 5 metres altogether. It's placed in the middle of a bigger stadium imagery in GE.
Here is the exported model

Thank you for your help, Gaieus. I know about the size issue, however I was first trying to make the model properly viewable before applying the right size and orientation. About your exported model - well, I guess there is something going bad with Google Earth under Linux. Here I have attached a screenshot on what it looks like. I have done the model with the aid of Wine, but considering you could properly open the model this should not be relevant. I will try installing Google Earth in a Windows virtual machine and check my model there. Ironically, the 3D buildings layer seems to work fine.
I will keep you informed, thank you again

That indeed looks weird.
Nothing like that on my XP.

Info update, seems Linux doesn't like my models
I have just re-scaled my model within the actual photo and tried it in the latest Google Earth versions both in Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows XP SP3. The results are dramatically different: Ubuntu's GE shows a deformed, largely upscaled, black model, and Windows' GE displays the model as it should be. So weird, indeed.
I'm attaching screenshots and my final model. Thanks for your help

Unfortunately I have zero experience with Linux so I am stumped here. Maybe you could report this on the Google Earth Help Forum?

Hi stage7,
this is neither a problem with Linux, nor with your kmz file. It is a known bug in Google's Collada reader of Google Earth (linux version). I reported it several times, but Google developers haven't touched anything except wiping away the bug report when they thought it was too old.
http://code.google.com/p/earth-issues/issues/detail?id=1186I usually get along without previewing models in Google Earth (but rather waiting until it is accepted to the 3D layer), or I use the Windows version of Google Earth in Wine.

@Aerilius: thank you very much for pointing out as everything is crystal clear now. I will keep on previewing my models in GE for Windows until they decide to fix the issue
(To a mod: please consider closing the topic, and thanks again for helping
