Dimensions of small holes
-
Hello, I'm always have a problem with dimensions of small holes in SU and LO, as it is very difficult to meet the center. How do you do that? Do you know a useful trick? I've been thinking about to draw instead of the hole, only a centerpoint. But, how do I add a point in the model?

Hi Mike,
If you have enabled extensions (and/or) utilities under Preferences > Extensions (you will need to restart SU), you can right click on the perimeter of a circle and add a point at its center. You can put these guide points on a hidden layer later so they are not seen but they are perfect to snap to with any tool.

Take a look at this plug by Chris Fullmer who add a Center Point from 2 segments welded or not touching or not so perfect for an arc or circle!

Csaba, good tip, but I regularly hit "Delete Guides" to quickly clean up my drawing, can you stop the marks being deleted?

Replace them by something else!

I regularly place guides in SketchUp to aid in locating dimensions in LO and then delete the guides when they are no longer needed. This works quite well for me especially when edges are radiused and it is difficult to hit the right end point with LO's dimension tool. I haven't run into problems inferring off centers of circles in LO, though. How small are they?

Unfortunately, no. Even when you put them into locked groups, they are deleted. You can copy and "paste in place" your needed guides into an empty file though and when done with all the modelling, do the same to get them back.
