Add item to SU main menu
-
Is there a way to add another item to the SU main menu (... edit, tools, window, plugins etc)?

No - no way to add a new top level menu.

Well ... Not easily anyhow.
Let's say that you COULD, for future feature's sake....
.. What kind of menus would you want to add ??
This question implies Google overlooked some categories.
My number 1 vote goes for an "Options" menu (which is usually just to the left of the Help menu.) The first item I'd put on it would be the "Preferences" dialog command (instead of having it near the bottom of the Window menu.)
Then a separator. Then add the "Large Button" and "Hide Dialogs" toggles below that. Then there are a lot of quick settings I could put one this menu or it's submenus. My number 2 vote is a "Ruby" menu, for controlling Ruby, and Development features.
My number 3 vote, is to move "Plugins" to the right end of the menu, after "Help" (but separated with a menu separator.)
And.. I did log all of these as feature requests.

You can add a 'BIM' submenu to the 'Tools' menu and put everything inside that.
The creating script could be named '!BIM.rb' so that 'BIM' appears at the top of the 'Tools' list, just below the native-tools... -
or there's this option...
