Newbie trying to understand shadowing and camera view

Dear All,
Just wondering if you could assist me. I just downloaded sketchup to draw up a proposed development backing onto my house where I believe the architect has screwed up the shadowing diagram submitted for the existing structure relative to the new building. The development will have a huge impact and I want to send some 3d drawing to illustrate the impact on us and my neighbours.
I have drawn up the proposal and the rear elevation of our houses and geo-located. When I look at the shadowing it indeed is different to the architecturals sent to council, but on closer inspection of my drawing, I notice that the shadows are only showing up against the X-Y plane, not the -Z plane where the ground falls away.
This falling contour is also reflected in the google earth terrain and I have placed buildings along this falling contour as per the surveyor's information.
Can someone illuminate me as to why this is the case, it almost seems as though I need to draw all the buildings on a flat plane and google adjust the shadow to suit the contours?
Cheers, Paul

Have a look at my recent thread on sun angle and shadows. Wo3Dan provided a link there which explains the whole process which I found useful. Your problem might have something to do with shadows being shown on the ground plane (not the topographic surface?). Go to shadow settings: "On Ground". Cheers - Mick

EDIT, see above
I think it may be related to where the axis is located.
The Red/Green access in the model effects the native SU shadows.
Without seeing a picture or model, my guess is you may need to lower the RG access (like to the basement) I think this will give you a better shadow.
Other here will have ideas I am sure.

In the shadow settings, uncheck the box for casting shadows on the ground...just leaving them cast on the faces.
Either this, or unlock the imported geo terrain, select the entire model and move it upwards so that nothing is beneath the ground plane.
