in autocad while selecting a lot of objects we often do a step that makes them deselect all. there's a command - called "PREVIOUS" which selects the previous objects. This issue also happens in sketchup but i don't know of any command like this "Previous" that selects the objects that were last selected.

I have to select all objects once again which wastes time. is there a workaround?

Keep Shift or CTRL pressed on the same time πŸ€“
          Release or not...try all combinaisons!

All makes that and that works very fine! πŸ˜‰

uh what i wanted pilou that after selection has been done if i press at a blank space..my objects get deselected. in autocad if i type the word previous, the objects that were selected previously get selected. in a nutshell autocad remembers what i last selected and selects them. it saves my selection in memory.

You know what - I want such a function myself... If the Selection Observer behave reliably it might not be that hard... will have to see. Before SU8 it was FUBAR - but I think it should be acting better now.

You are not in in Autocad but result will be the same!
Multiple selection in SU is made with SHIFT Pressed (if one object is yet selected it will be deselect)
                  I don't see any difficulty πŸ˜„
And even you click on a blank space just reselect all with a box selection then deselect the objects not wanted!
And that is not obliged the last one πŸ˜‰

And try also one click, double click, triple click !

Ps But if Thomthom want to make the trick you are in good hands β˜€

Pilu, he's not asking about how to add to a selection, but how to restore a selection. For instance, if you have a selection and click on empty model space everything is deselected - sometimes that is not what you wanted and would like to restore the selection.

In the interim, while thomthom creates some more amazing plugins (and I don't mean that sarcastically, his work is outstanding) have you tried the selection toys plugin? It makes selecting and deselecting specific geometry types a breeze.

Some times is it - when you've carefully crafted a complex selection where automated tools cannot be used.

That might be - but it is what I have some times when I take over models made by others. Or import geoemtry from AutoCAD or Revit. In which case I often need to carefully select and separate specific elements so I can regroup it.

Ok - got something of a prototype working. Cycles through the last five selection sets. Though, it will probably have to be modified to work with OSX - as OSX can have multiple open models, selections might run into crossover issues. I'm working on a deadline this weekend so I don't have much more time until next week to look at that.

                                  I folks.

If you plan on doing a very complex selection and are afraid that you may loose it after an accidental click on empty space or whatever, like letting go of the SHIFT key, etc, I have the following trick: create a temporary group with some object or objects that are easy to rapidly select. Then, continue to select objects, cut them, open the temporary group and Paste it place. Get out of the group context and repeat the procedure.

When the group contains all the objects you want, enter its context and do what you need to do. The fun part is that if anything goes wrong, you can undo and you still have the group that still contains all your carefully selected objects.

When completely done with this selection (group), explode it.

This may seems like a lot of work but, believe me, the little time wasted using this trick will be much less than the time lost trying to reselect and rerereselect and ... etc.

A model that is well stuctured with components and named groups can also be easily managed with the Outliner.

                                  Just ideas.

This is one area where I geatly prefer AutoCAD's method. In AutoCAD you can keep selecting without de-selecting objects by accident. To de-select you hold down the Shift key. Much better than SketchUp.

weeeell... "better" is very subjective on this matter. I could easily take your statement and flip SketchUp and AutoCAD. I don't like the way of selecting in AC. But I do like that it let you restore previous selection.

So far as I know, it (Autocad) won't let you COPY previous. And don't try to do large selections for move or stretch and then zoom in for precision box selection, because in this case all that is selected has to be fully within display.

I take the slow, deliberate approach in my aimless wandering.
