If this is a part from a labeling machine, is it for kerning/spacing?

I wonder if TIG's Grow plugin could make two helices which have increasing pitch as they go up and then use his Extrude Tools to create the faces.
I'll see if I can give it a go but I have a couple of projects ahead.
