The cenotaph is the statue and base in the image.
From Wikipedia: "The word derives from the Greek κενοτάφιον = kenotaphion (kenos, one meaning being "empty", and taphos, "tomb")."

Well, don't feel embarrassed. I needed to research it myself to understand the term. And, of course, you have to decide how much credence you place in Wikipedia. By the way, this is an interesting project you have, and the imagery is looking very good. 👍 👍

            I do. 😉

            Nice images, Bruce! 👍

As for the cenotaph: statue is not needed (although is often part). The Greek says it all: an empty tomb. Now why would someone build an empty tomb? It is really a memorial for the deceased. Typically think of the symbolic tombs of Jesus for instance (a "normal" Cross Road or Calvary always has one - the last, 14th of course).

We have those memorials in every town and village as well, I know (below is for WW2 in my town).

I was abroad all week (Googling) and was indeed busy but am back now to my old routine. 😄

In the UK there are war-memorials and cenotaphs everywhere [too may wars!] - however, the local war-memorial for WWI near where I live is a building! Public subscriptions were collected after WWI to erect a memorial, but when the cash was in and the locals voted on the form for that memorial they decided it ought to be something useful - so they built a doctors-surgery! So my own doctors are based in the 'memorial-medical-centre' down the road...
There is a small 'cenotaph' in the park behind the building where poppy-wreaths are laid on 11/11 etc, but the bulk of the money went on the building - although it has been refurbished and extended over the years it's kept its name, and it still has the stone plaque built into the wall by the entrance explaining its origins.
I think it was a farsighted thing to do at the time - "help the living whilst remembering the dead"...

Well, your war memorial is not a true cenotaph then (as there may be dead bodies in there occasionally) 😒
