I have a cylinder I'd like to rotate in a plane parallel to one of the cardinal planes, say green-blue. It's currently perpendicular to the green-red plane. I need to "attach" the protractor to a point on the cylinder such that the protractor is parallel to the green-blue plane (or the green axis). How do I do that? Thanks

Orbit your view so that you can get the green Rotate protractor when the tool is above the horizon. (looking down the green axis with the camera). Once the protractor is green, hold Shift to lock it. Now click on the desired center of rotation.

You can also use the rotate tool without shift.

Click, hold and drag the tool, the protractor will change colour as you move it around, release the click when it is "Green", click again and rotate, click to finish.

This method allows you to select specific directions rather then just the colours, because you can click and drag to a specific part of your object so that it rotates along that axes.

For example: Draw a simple square, click on one corner, hold and drag to the corner diagonally opposite, release click, click again and rotate, then click to finish.
This rotates on the diagonal of the square rather than one of the edges as it would if it was a coloured axes.

              Move tool do it to:
              -group the cylinder
              -choose move tool
-you notice red point on the bounding box when the cursor is over it
-put the cursor on a red point it become a rotate tool.
go to an other face of the bounding box to change axis.

                Hi folks.

This procedure is described in SketchUp's help in this article:

                http://sketchup.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=94897

IMHO, I think that it should have been explained in the articles pertaining to the Rotate Tool instead of mentioning in article about "Folding geometry".

                Just ideas.
