What actually slows down LayOut3?

I have a smallish project, a septic system design, that is only about 6 pages (11x17) long. (Some of my working drawings are 20 plus pages)
There is a sketchup model with some "SU warehouse" models, a pdf file ( a pic of a septic tank with specifications) and some text loaded from the internet (Health Department rules)LayOut 3 got so slow that I had to divide the whole thing up into 3 segments.
I unlinked the pdf and text files, so they became "embedded" as I did not need a circular reference to a website or a file that was downloaded, yet these portions of this file remain slow but not as slow as they were.
As I use many of the aspects SU/LO to create my architectural working drawings, (my document setup files / links) can be extensive) I need to be clear on how best to "link / import" specific types of files into my drawings to keep the speed optimal.
I welcome any suggestions and insights.

That question has so many possible answers. First, I'd look at Edit Quality (File->Document Setup->Paper) and make sure it's set to low. Raster models will render faster. And I'd leave my models in raster until I'm almost done with the project, then I'd render in hybrid or vector and give it time to render. Next, I'd look at how big the images and pdf's are, and if they're huge, how could I reduce their size without losing image quality. Lastly, go to File->Document Setup->References and purge unused to clean things up.

is there any way to globally change all rendering types to raster or to hybrid or vector?
clicking through page after page before i export to PDF, when i have 2-3-4 models per page, in 10-20 page documents gets old... -
Only per page. Select all, then select rendering. Boy, a ruby API would be nice
