      Hi all,

I'm very new to sketchup so learning as I go. I've imported a png drawing which is the flooplan for my house (which I want to plan an extension on). I want to be able to draw the walls etc on top of the picture but not have them connected to it, at the moment when I draw a wall and drag it upwards it brings the lines etc off the picture with it.

Is there a tutorial or quick tip you can point me in the direction of ?

      thanks

      paul

        Paul,
This is how I do png imports. Keep in mind I am using windows not mac. I import my floor plan then explode the png. Select all and then group the imported plan. Then I create a layer named Floorpln and assign the imported floor plan to this layer. This will allow me to toggle between floor plan & model for visibility as needed. I select the new grouped floor plan go to the edit menu and select lock.

        Good luck, hope this helps.

Either what ccs/jp says (group the face that is painted with the floor plan image) or import it as an image (and do not explode it to geometry & material but leave it like that).

When I have to trace image based floor plans, I also turn X-ray on so that the faces created "over" the image do not completely cover it.

            Gai,
I also import as an image, but if I don't explode and group I end up with plan texture on pulled walls. The other reason I went to exploding my imports is I have been plagued with numerous bug splats after importing an image.(Why I can't answer) The only resolve I have found to date is to explode and group. I have not had any bug splats in the last ten days or so.
