      Sorry if this is a dumb question but is there any way (via plugins) to use lights in SU? Seems like everything I se is daylit. Thanks!

        did you activate the shadows ?

        doing technical engineering on SketchUp ... without plugins

          You will need to render the model in order to work with light effects. There are plenty of links on the forum to a whole range of renderers...some free, some fairly pricey.
          There's LightUp, Podium, Kerkythea, Twilight , V-Ray...just to mention a few

          Were you required to walk 500 miles? Were you advised to walk 500 more?

            yes I am aware of these renderers but they all seem to just render with a sun. What I bneed is to use artificial light sources like lamps. Is that possible?

              All those renderers have an assortment of lights such as spot or point. They also have the ability to make actual surfaces emit...so you can place a point light inside a lamp shade or make the lampshade itself glow...or both. They're not limited to just the sun by any means.
