Is there a way to create a box on a layout page to select and the Insert Dialog box opens.

Not that I know of (and ruby isn't yet(?) implemented in layout)
You could however assign it to a keystroke.
(which IMO is even better than an icon shortcut)

Getting fed up of having to scroll through the same posts each visit?
