Don't confuse him. This should be dealt with by his new host.

Now wait till your new host sets up your account and transfers the domain.

The whole transition may take a couple of days so do as I suggested and notify your current clients about this temporary interval during which they may need to contact you via an alternate email address.

Yes Pete, but your domain will point to your new place once they processed your order. This is what those name servers are for.

Imagine that you have a street address somewhere and your name on the door.
Now when you move to a different place, your street address will change but you get your name label off the door and nail it to your new home.

Earch web space has an address. It is called an IP address. Your current webspace has a certain address and the one you have just subscribed to (and got them to get your domain there as well) has a different IP.

Those name servers work as a telephone directory - allow browsers to find a certain iP address by name. So once they have processed the move of your domain, it will point to your new webspace. Setting up an email address there is easy and quick but there still may be some time until you do it so this is just a precaution.

If you do not understand what I am saying, just do how I suggest (you must trust me - after all we shared a room at BaseCamp and you came out virgin - I think at least)

SCRATCHING HEAD FULL OF GREY HAIR

Okay, so that we are on the same page let me explain what I have done so far...

I signed up with hostmoster, using solosplace.com as my domain name, I downloaded every image from my site and put it in a folder, ready to send it to my new FTP when I get to actually building my new site.

That's all, I have not done anything else, so you are saying hostmonster will grab my domain and host it without me cancelling with microsoft? how will I know they have it and when can I start building the site? why is my head about to explode?

I thought I could build my site and then when done flip a switch and tada!! all done live and happy. Why is website crap so complicated?

Yes, more or less. They need to set up the name servers and such. That is not just a click - and especially not a click by you but the company (generally).

Hopefully they will send you an email. They will also send you an email saying what your login details to your webspace are and such. You can reply that email (or contact them in any other way they provide) as this protocol may vary from company to company.

That would probably not work - at least not without additional hassle. These websites are run by databases and even setting up the database and the config file needs the domain already (or else you need to change a lot of things later).

These are technical details however so I do not want to bore you to death. When your domain is transferred and your webspace is up and running, setting up a site is just a matter of 10-15 minutes. Then you can start creating your "posts" and all that crap.

Until then, you may want to think about what structure you want to give to it. Like "pages" (generally static content like "who I am" which does not frequently change - at least for normal people) that will go to a top navigation menu and "posts" - say your individual projects etc.

I'm not sure Hostmonster will redirect your name servers. Since your domain name is managed by another party they cannot access them.

You could redirect the name servers yourself but you do not have any files in your hostmonster public_html directory to redirect them to....

                    Steps I would suggest.

                    Go to cpanel

                    go to domains

                    go to transfer domains

                    they have a video
                    https://www.hostmonster.com/cgi/help/transfer

hostmonster will transfer your domain to them. Then you have full control of everything at hostmonster.

Now do you want another website or do you want to use your domain for a wordpress site?

If website, build you website on your computer and upload it to the public_html directory. If a wordpress site, go to software services, wordpress, install at the bottom of the page.

If you use wordpress you will have to upload all your images to your wordpress blog. Be careful you will get a totally clean blog and you will start from scratch....

I would recommend transferring your domain from the other guys and downloading and uploading your existing site into hostmonster as a start.

This is why websites are like tooth pulling.

I have watched that movie, gone to MS website forums, and they said:

You'll need to cancel the domain first: http://home.officelive.com/settings/pages/CancelWizard.aspx. Once cancel you should get the unlock code. Which you can then unlock at Melbourne IT and do whatever you want with the domain.

The problem is I have no way to log into Melbourne I tried everything every name, even when they asked for my website address it does not compute.

This is why I stayed with microshit so long...moving a website is harder than moving a house.

                          Pete do this.

Go to cpanel and buy a new domain name. They are cheap and you can worry about your old one later.

After you buy it, go to cpanel, software/services and hit wordpress. Down at the bottom left corner hit install. It will prompt for your new url. It will install a fresh copy of wordpress and give you the login information.

Login and add a picture. have a beer. (or two)

you might check and see if Network Solutions has control of your domain. they are the end all original controllers via ICANN.

Pete, contact the hostmonster (or what) site. They should be able to suggest what is best - after all, you have just signed up with them for two years.

I have moved domains from one place to the other already and there was no issue with it at all.

And when you have your domain/host problems sorted out you should consider carefully what you should use for creating your web pages. CMS systems are mostly useful for sites where you add a lot of new stuff all the time, but they are not that easy to set up or maintain. I've made 2 Joomla sites for clients, but it turned out to be a complete overkill, as they can't manage to add aricles and/or images. They managed to mess things up though.
If you don't know much/any about html, css, php, Javascript etc, and don't have someone to set his up and run it for you, I think you should look at a more direct approach.
My absolute favourite is Xara Designer Pro from http://xara.com
They also have Web Designer available. I've been using Xara, which is basically a very fast, powerful and versatile vector drawing program, for many years for all kinds of graphics and print stuff, but hadn't used its web site tools before a couple of months ago. Now I don't use anything else at all ๐Ÿ˜„
It is extremely easy to use, and everything shows up on the web exactly as you designed it. It comes with a lot of templates too, to help you get started, as well as drag&drop widgets for eCommerce and lots of other stuff. Want to show a video - just drag it from Explorer and drop it into your page.YouTube, GoogleMaps, PayPal etc. And if you want to you could also add Javascripting, php etc...
It also publishes your site for you via a built-in ftp-client.
And there are two very helpful support forums for it, at http://www.talkgraphics.com/ and at http://board.xara-users.info/

FTR I'm not in any way attached to Xara, but just a very happy longtime customer ๐Ÿ˜„
                                Xara is a gem ๐Ÿ˜„

There is never a trouble with moving domains ... Generally the new hosts even prefer you just transfer the domain and do a new website, this way, they avoid possible remaining traces of previous hosts (competitors) ... So once your owned content is secured, you may contact the new host to transfer the domain ... As soon as they start the process (usually takes 1-2weeks) I suggest you start building the new site, using the new host's templates or not !
domain name and the site content are not linked together
