I have a parking garage deck all as one component. As it turns out, we're now going to break the deck into two phases, so I need to split the deck in half and make Phase 1 a component, and Phase II a component. How do I do that?

Sounds like a lot of geometry for one component. You could either explode the component and then select the geometry for phase one and make a new component (make sure the "replace" box is ticked.) Select the remainder and make the phase two component. Or you could open the component for editing, select all that phase one geometry and make a component (remember the tick box) and do the same with the rest for phase two. This will result in a nested component.

Unfortunately that's as easy as it gets. You'll probably need to spend some time making sure you got everything selected for the proper phase.

          Hi folks.

I see these two ways of doing that:

First possibility: Copy the component. Make the copy unique. Rename each one to get relevant names such as "Phase 1" and Phase 2". Edit each one to delete irrelevant geometry.

Second possibility: Rename the component as "Phase 1". Enter the component context. Select and cut the geometry that shall be in "Phase 2". Exit the component definition. Paste in place. While the pasted geometry is still selected, make a new component with it and name it "Phase 2".

          Just ideas.

            Thanks for the suggestions.

What I wound up doing was copying the component out from the model, exploding it, sub-dividing it into phases, and making each phase a unique component with the same basic name as the full deck. So I would up with components:
            Deck L1
            Deck L1.1
            Deck L1.2
            Deck L1.3

This way I could also turn on the un-seamed deck at the end to remove the visible joints easily.
