Check out ely862me's postings. Maybe also converse with him. My understanding is that the car modeling process is a lot of knitting. He may also use some plugins in the process. Probably Subdivide and Smooth, which is a retail plugin.
TIG's Extrude Tools set is capable.
        Fredo's Curviloft can do it.

More importantly, you have to go through the learning curve, whether you do everything from scratch or with plugins, and depending on how well you learn, the time curve can be fairly short, or excruciatingly long.

I am certainly not trying to scare you away, as the learning can be very rewarding- at least it is for me on a personal level.

        I stop babbling now.

I take the slow, deliberate approach in my aimless wandering.

          +1 for Mitcorb's suggestions.

I would personally try to avoid SD&S as it can have unwanted results as far as size and shape changes that can affect the fit of car panels, but there's no reason not to give it a try.

Definitely Curviloft, JPP and the Extrude Tool set.

Fredo's Bezier plugin will certainly help as well.
