File format cheat sheet for program interoperability
-
Hi all,
I thought I'd post this here for you 3d modelers...
After many years of trail and error, I've put together a cheat sheet to use when sending geometry from one program to another. All 3d programs give you too many (or not enough) options to choose from when you hit export. Which one do you use? This resource gives you exactly what you need to stop experimenting to get that geometry into another 3d program. They all talk to each other, but it can be a chore to figure out what language they all speak - DWG, FBX, DAE, 3DS... the list goes on and on. I give you the best format to use for the current version of the software and some extra notes to make the transfer as painless as possible. Lucky you!

Feel free to pass this link along to anyone you think would find it useful. Programs covered include SketchUp, Bonzai, Revit, 3ds Max, Cinema4d, etc...

Sorry it didn't work for you. It works fine in Safari, Chrome and Firefox as far as I can tell. Could it be that you are using Internet Explorer? Here's a shortened link:

Hi Etroxel
nice initiative
just one comment:- from SU to Artlantis, it's less error-prone if you use the Artlantis exporter from the Artlantis website instead of opening SKP in Artlantis
-
What errors have you seen? I've never found an error in the SKP import. Maybe the ATL export contains more options? I know that the ATL exporter allows you to export by layer, but i find that a mess of a way to work in SketchUp. I prefer to work with groups, wherein there may be an object with different materials on different faces of the same object. Working this way makes sense moving into Artlantis because of the way materials are handled by grouping like-materials together.
I'd love to hear more on this.
Thanks!

Hi Evan,
Artlantis sometimes messes up stuff when you've put multiple components that cut into a face, in one face. I had them end up 20 meters up in the air above their original position. I have no idea why it went wrong, but when I used the atl-exporter in su, I did not get this error.
in the export by layer function I am not interested. that is a feature invented for people who can't let go of autocad conventions.cheers,

hi evan,
I have visited your site and was very impressed by your videos. they are really useful and full of overlooked aspects of sketchup. congratulations.

Thanks for following up Martha. I'm happy to hear that it can be a better experience using the plugin. I've had the exact opposite results in Bonzai3d... DWG is better than the ATL export plugin in that application.
I'll add your suggestion to the chart.
