Paint on, easy texturing

I first got the idea a while back when I was using MS paint, imagine painting on materials or textures to easly color 3d in sketchup.

Obviously it wont be this complex but it would be a worthy plugin.

That youtube video looks like the model has about 5.3 gazillion polys. Over which it would be quite conceivable to air brush color and texture, because infinitesimally small variations are below the level of visibility. Interesting brush controls in the application.
I would certainly welcome the capability of doing this in my favorite modeling app
