3D Warehouse component problem
-
Hi Mr. Tee (and welcome)!
For this, you need to understand a very important thing; all components are actually real, full SketchUp models that you use insideanother model. Imagine somehow like this:
(your current model [another model included as component] any other geometry etc...)
Now if you create a DC inside your model, and upload it by right clicking and uploading to the warehouse, it will not upload as a component but as a simple model. If you open that model, you will not see any DC functionalities but the pieces "inside" that model. It is somehow similar to when you edit a component inside your model - when you are in edit mode, the functionalities do not work because they only work when in relationship to the outside of the component inserted in a model.
You get the same result when you right click on a component and "Save as...". It will be saved as a full SU model that you can open but without the functionalities that would work only "from outside", when you insert it into another model.
Components other than DC's can also have behaviours that ony work when you insert them into a model (but never when you open them separately).
This is the case with components that glue to or cut holes on faces and components that face to the camera when looking at them from outside, inserted into another model.
Have a look at this model of mine in the 3D Warehouse for instance. If you insert it into another model as a component, it will always rotate and face to the camera. However if you open it straight away, it will do nothing. The face me properties are stored at model level in it (Open the Model info dialog from the Window menu and go to the "File" tab - it is something that you can see in the "Make component" dialog).
So you have two choices in this case;
- upload it as a component and write up something in the description field like I did in the above example
- or do not upload as a component but upload the whole file - but in this case write something like "if you load this as a component, explode the outer shell first".
(When a component is inside another component, we call this latter an "outer shell")

Thanks for response and for explaining that topic!
I Think i'll upload them as components, have a look if you like:
http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=c8d10e463cbec8a4ab610b0c94236463&prevstart=0The idea is that it should be as easy as possible for people that are new to sketchup to use all our models.
It would also be good to be able to send a link to people so the can easily access all of our products in one collection.
But then i guess they will have the problem with the objects that are broken down?thanks again!

Only if they open instead of imports them.
You can wrap everything in your model into a group - to ensure things stay groups if they should open instead of importing. -
Hi!
Yes i guess if I tell them to import instead s you suggested it should work.
Wrap as a group is good to!
Thanks! -
May I ask what is dynamic in that model? It does report as dynamic but when I insert it into my model, I cannot access any dynamics.
Anyway, I would still suggest to add that one-liner like "insert it straight into your model" or such. Just in case someone does not get it.
When we are at it, I could not resist to make a 5' render of your desk (I never do such "techie" models so it was kind of refreshment)

nice render mate!

Nothing is really dynamic. but when I first started with this project I thought it was best to wrap them up in a component if we wanted to use some attributes later!
Im trying to understand collections, im not sure if the 3d warehouse is ment to work this way but ideally I would like to use them for our products in a hierarchy, where the underlying collections only shows under another collection.. at the moment the underlying one also is showing by itself??
I would like to send a link to a client where he can easalie overview and download all our products as models. is that possible in the warehouse? -
Ah, okay. I thought I was overlooking something, sorry.
Keeping your models in collections is always a good idea (I should not be so lazy not to do this myself)
-
No worries!
By the way what renderer are u using?

I have Twilight, IDX Renditioner, Kerkythea and Thea (just starting to learn). Also LightUp Evaluation version (trying to get the hang of it).
