Hi Guys,
I've some across AC3D http://www.inivis.com/index.html Its Win, Mac and Linux!
AC3D may be well worth the £79.95 asking price just for the UV Unwrapper/Mapper and Polygon Reduction features.
I am very impressed with the the 3D File Support which looks to be very comprehensive.

... and it has many import / export formats too...
One to watch...

pretty kool... the poly reduce does some strange things for me... but still kool. I'm sure I'm just doing something wrong. I like the UV mapping too... nice size 10MB, full function for 14 days of trial. another strange thing is the price... £79.95 would be $126.32 American, but the American price is also $79.95 that would only be £50... I don't know...
good find though. I'm gonna keep trying with it. I think the UV mapping could make my life easier.

The price is in $... [Mike's typo] - so ~$80 or ~£50...

Oppps! Thanks TIG for advising. I'll leave my typo there so your correction will make sense ..... does this make sense

been playing with it some more... the reduce poly works well, it just wants the model to be one mesh when doing so.
the UV mapping is quick and easy too...
so far the only uv problem I have had is mapping a oddly rotated object. you have to make a copy and square it up, then copy it back and rotate it back after mapping.
I'm impressed with how it handles high geometry count...
the user interface is pretty straight forward, but for a sketchup user it's a bit odd in view and view rotation handling.... some of the natural view movement keys in SU equal moving the model in AC3D... not good... and rotation is limited to the button on each window if I'm not mistaken. and it's something I need handy readily.
no direct sketchup import...
has a really kool view feature, where you can create multiple views in free floating windows, great for multiple monitor use while uv mapping.
another thing to mention might be the smooth and subdivide... works nicely.
one day I'll have sweet UV mapping in SU and will have no need to look at these things.

This software is only really useful to me, if its units can be defined as centimetres or metres. It's my main complaint about many of these 3D modellers, like for eg, the otherwise excellent Cheetah3D, units come in one package only- completely useless for architecture or engineering purposes.
A far better bargain in my honest opinion, would be ViaCAD 2D/3D, because units can be easily defined as standard units of measurement (VC also uses ACIS, the same 3D kernel as AutoCAD). Fortunately, SketchUp allows for this standard setup of units too.
