OTB Idea #7: Precise move: Brilliant! Now make it stick
-
Chuck: Let's say I draw 4 elements that I want to group, place, copy repeatedly, and place the copies. It seems that the inference engine goes to pieces when you select multiple pieces to move as one, or group them and try to move the whole thing. I can't get things to snap consistently, and I lose the ability to reliably and repeatedly move things the same amount. So, then I have to move one part to where I want it, and then move everything else, one at a time, so I can get the snapping behavior I expect and need.
Barry: See Precise Move in LayOut 3.0.
Chuck: Yes, the precise move is an excellent and appreciated addition to Layout, no doubt about it. It would be even better if I could place construction lines to snap to and then delete easily. This keeps me from having to snapping to a SU geometry and then moving the item away to where I want it, using the inference engine to keep it in line. Works, but could be faster. And, as far as precise move goes, why doesn't Layout remember where I placed the rotation point? So now, every time I want to move a model instance, I have to replace the rotation point back to where I needed it. This adds needless zooming out and in when you are working 24x36 pages.
Barry: Feature request for Precise Move filed: store the Center of Operation location persistently with it's entity.

Thanks Barry!

I really wish 'move' in LayOut was similar to SketchUp.
Precise move is welcome - but it seem cumbersome.
I'd really like to be able to select objects and then start a move by clicking somewhere in space, or on a specific point, and then entering a number (perhaps after locking in a direction) or clicking to another point. All the bells and whistles of the scale / rotate / etc. that lights up when I select an object feels very cumbersome to me. I don't want those things 'built in' - if I need to scale something - I'd prefer to grab a scale tool. If I need to move something - I'd prefer to hit 'M' in my keyboard and expect the same logic from SketchUp. All those little triangles that follow me around make me nuts. (with the exception of dimensions, which should have their own logic for moving and placing / re-placing their reference lines).
I use LayOut more and more for construction docs - but the workflow (for me) should follow the SketchUp methodology to make it really simple (and fast) to use.

+1 on making things more SU like, though, after some practice, I am starting to get pretty efficient with Layout.
As far as move goes, I wish, once an object is selected, that I could hold down the control key and start clicking the arrow keys to move a copy around. As of now, you have to click and drag the object with the control key pressed, and then drop the new object and fine tune with the arrows. It would be nice to cut the mouse out the equation.

That too!
I'd really like workflow to be like this:spacebar
grab objects (window or individual)
initiate tool - rotate, move, move+ctrl, etc.
click reference point
then
click resting point
or
indicate direction
enter dimension, angle, etc.the whole coordinate 'precise' move is maddening.
and i do want an option to set what the arrow keys move - in my choice of pts, inches, decimal inches, metric, etc. etc.
and, while i'm getting faster - i hate having to 'rethink' every move. i bounce back and forth - so it would be nice if the same workflow / logic to moving / copying / etc. applied here as well.

Hi guys,
I actually had a conversation with Sandra about this very function. [Barry you were there too at the mexican restaurant remember?]I mentioned to Sandra that the precise move is a great addition although it was still cumbersome. We discussed whether once selected, maybe hold down the 'Ctrl' key to stick the snap/rotate icon to the cursor so you can move to where you need to be and 'snap'. Also, the model window extends don't really need to have snapping properties [in most cases] when in Object snap mode as it's frustrating as hell trying to move the model window around the page when it's trying to snap to every point within reach...

Brilliant!
It would go without saying that a "reset center of operation" command would be needed?
+1 vote for construction lines or guide lines in LayOut

Barry, I just want to make clear what I meant by the model window extent I made in the above post.
When moving the model around the page it [especially when using the precise move tool] the corners of the model window possess snapping properties.
I'd like to see this either disabled when using the precise move tool as they are of no use when moving precisely. I understand at times there may be times when the corners of a window may be needed when formatting page layouts although really no other use.Cheers,

Really? It shouldn't. I just tried it on Win7 and Snow Leopard, and it doesn't for me. What OS, what LO version, etc..?
