Bounding box as a zoom constraint?
-
One thing that has been very annoying to me when making Sketchup models is accidentally zooming into the distance when working on a detail of a piece of a model.
I'm wondering if there is any plugin that restricts the zoom; ideally, for instance, I'd like an invisible limit at some multiplier of the bounding box of an object.
Also, could anyone say if has there been any improvement of this behavior in Sketchup 8?

If you have something selected in your model. Context click and choose Zoom Extents. The camera will zoom to the selection. Also the Zoom Extents on the toolbar will zoom to show you the entire model instead.

I have always been bothered by this as well. If you keep the cursor on or above an object this "WACKO" zoom to infinity does not happen. But it's just a workflow thing I tend to keep my focus on modeling and rely on the middle mouse wheel as a navigation tool. I for example never use the orbit icon or the zoom icon etc. It's a workflow habit. It would be great if when an object is selected the zoom feature will use that object as the basis for zooming. I realize there are zoom extents and you can bring the camera back to the previous camera view. What I don't like is that the dynamic zoom jumps so rapidly into outer space if you happen to zoom while the cursor is not above any entities.

This is just my observation from personal use.
If one were to regard the model environment as a stage scene with a camera in first person mode, it would become clear that the cursor, whether in zoom or orbit or select directs that camera where to look. Clicking on empty space confuses the camera function and its directives become random.
I have noticed this while zoomed in tight and then activating orbit-- suddenly my scene sweeps far away from where I was. Or scrolling out can sometimes do the same thing.
Bottom line. The camera needs definitive input or it behaves randomly.
