Have a look at this clip- can anyone explain how he gets the Rotate Tool to flip up in the z axis like that (without referencing a surface in the same plane) in order to rotate flat geometry that is lying on the xy plane?
Do you follow? He the rotate tool never flips up like that for me- it stays flat on the same plane as the geometry. I always have to make a cube so i can reference a surface, holding the shift key to do what seems to just happen magically here.
      HOW DO YOU DO THIS?

how does he make the rotation tool do that?

When you click-hold-drag the rotate tool, it aligns to the axis that you drag along.

See this tut, starting at 3:00 mins she explains how:

Damn....something I never knew either! I always use Shift and another plane to lock orientation. This will make life easier! Just goes to show....no question is too silly and you never know who else you may help!!

True. I have been using SU since V2 and I only learned that one after watching Gaieus use it after the last Basecamp.

Troy there are NO dumb questions only dumb answers πŸ˜‰ I would be ashamed to show you how I STILL do some SU manipulations. Part of the habits developed since SUv1 but I am gradually changing the habits πŸ‘
