The significance of Avatars
-
Eric's "Identification" post got me thinking. Why do we post the avatar that we do? I believe I read in Wikipedia that it is derived from Sanskrit and represents the concept if incarnation.
There are real photo's, manipulated photos, cartoons, animations, our children, pictures of carvings (that's mine), animals, animals placed next to body parts I scroll away from when my wife walks by.....
Does your avatar have special meaning?
Does it truly represent you?
Is it just for fun?
Does it help promote your work?
What Avatar do you think Napoleon or other famous people would choose for themselves?
Will James Cameron make a sequel?
This is not a test. You don't have to answer all the questions. Honest. -

I like forums that allow avatars. I think the visual identification of a person is easiest to relate to, whatever the image.
As far as what avatar to choose I assume can be difficult for some and easy for others. I used to change my avatar on a weekly basis. It started to get annoying for me and I know it did for others. Once I created the 3d Smiley it made me happy. Every time I saw it I would smile a little bit. This made it a good choice for me. It was something I created and it makes me happy. Narcissistic? OCD? ADD? All of the above my friends.
I don't think my avatar represents me all of the time but I do like to make people laugh so...
It was made for fun but done so with SketchUp and Twilight so it does represent and promote my work in some respect. And I think this would be Luke's avatar

The level of thought i put into my avatar, look left, is floating between 0.01% and 0.05%. It's my name using 3D text and rendered in twilight. I'd put up a picture but i'm afraid of ridicule.....
But i do think certain things when i see avatars/username before reading the posts....
Putting faces to these will be interesting come September...

Well that's what kind of started this was Eric's topic http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?p=260879#p260879
And I know that if I could see peoples avatars at base camp I would certainly recognize them over just a name tag.
Interesting that now there are two avatars modeled in SketchUpand rendered in in Twighlight
