      Hello,
I use a 19” wide screen monitor, SU 7pro and XP.
Is it possible to make an image 4:3 at higher than current display resolution (use view size), without cropping the length?
The problem arises for clients that print.
      I’m trying to get 7.5” x 10” at 300dpi (leaves a nice ½” whitespace all around).
With my monitor, setting the length to 3000 pixels, the height defaults to 1664. Resizing in PS: the length to 10” and the height defaults to 5.5” at 300 dpi. Which gives the ½” white space on the ends, but then 1.5” on top and bottom. (which some clients like so they can add text, others want the image a full 7.5”).
If I work the other way, in SU set the height to 2250 and let the length default. Then resize in PS 7.5” tall. I have to crop the image to get the length for 10”
Am I missing something simple or is cropping the only way?
I have the utility Sizer, which is great for export at screen resolution.
What do you do for larger size images say 18x24?.
Thanks for your comments, ideas, suggestions.
      Glenn

        Hi Glenn,

I am not familiar with all those American sizes - the only number I really understand is the 4:3 aspect ratio.

Now you say you have sizer (and I guess you don't hassle with messed up toolbars either); when you set the aspect ratio to 4:3 (SU output) in Sizer, why cannot you export whatever image size is possible in SU? You are not confined to screen resolution; just overwrite whatever is written there (uncheck "View size").

        Something like this.

          Hi Gaieus,
          Thanks for your reply.
          I’m not understanding something.
You have a preset for Sizer set to 4:3?
What pixel values are you using for that?
Could this be a windows issue, it looks like you are on a mac?

Yes, here it is. And of course, a 16:9, too. Add the scene tab, menu and title bar and the frame all around. You will probably not be able to simply copy the pixel values as this always differs due to display settings (I always tweak my Windows display).

I am on XP just as you. Here is my "general" desktop when working with SU (I have a 17" wide screen monitor):

              Gaieus,
              Thanks again.
I was able to get a 4:3 setup (Sizer 1058x887, SU 1000x750). Which will allow me to export at 3000x2250 (for the 300 dpi letter size image I was after).
I found out my monitor is 1440 pixels x 900 pixels. So I have some constraints there.
Also, I played around with layout last night, that might be an option as well…set up a template for the various sheet sizes I need.

                Fine, glad it helped.

Although I see you have docked toolbars - this may still cause some headaches when resizing the SU window...

                  I can present an alternative:

                  V-Ray Toys - http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=15491#p119728
You don't need V-Ray to use it.

You can use it to set the aspect ratio of the SU viewport, gives you safe-frames.
Then you can also use it to export the the content within the safe-frames.

Note: due to an SU bug the camera zooms in when you set the aspect ratio.

                    Thomas,
Thanks for the idea, I’ll take a look when I have some free time and let you know.

Using Layout is another alternative when trying to control the aspect ratio. Its also great if you have many scenes to export. With Layout you have to setup the page the first time, but on subsequent prints, it just a single click. If you are careful with your scene naming you can use old Layout files already setup, and swap out the source model.
