Another interesting project (for me) is some Medieval stuff - some reconstructions after a 2008-2009 excavation near a (used to be) city gate. According to some finds, it must have been some "Fachwerk" building and it has a beautiful cellar, too (not in the picture yet - more exactly underground).

Thanks Aerilius for his "Butzelngas" Kerky material! for the windows. πŸ‘

There is another building next to it (white contour on the terrain) and a couple of other, smaller ones like stables, sties, wells whatnot in the surrounding and the backyards.

Of course I won1t update the topic with every and each hay stack I add - just am a bit excited about this new project.

Wew that looks cool man! Looking forward to seeing it progress.

Did you actually model the unevenness on the plaster or is it time to clean my monitors?

BTW, the porchroof could do with a little more thickness, or would that be historically inaccurate?

          Hi Philip,

          Thanks...

The "bumps"+ on the wall are actually bumpmaps (I made a B&W image with a "Cloud" filter) in the render. As these walls are never really even, there must be something...

These wall bumpmaps make the difference. That was my first thought, when I saw the picture. Very good.

Nice! I like the Fachwerk (half-timber for the rest of us) style, hope to see more of your project as it goes.

Gai, I always thought that medieval buildings were "on grade" for livestock, kitchens, storage and stuff. But, here is an elevated building. Are there functional, or environmental reasons for that?

Note that this is in a town - no matter how "loosly" this town was built in (I still have to add a couple of "dummy" buildings to represent this in the background).

The shadow at the bottom right actually comes from the city gate tower (I just have not developed that part fully and nicely for a render).

Most of the "simple" houses where we have evidence prove to be two storey buildings here but of course, there must have been variations.

Well, another shot from the other side; now there is the city gate (and Aladdin with his magic lamp in the background), too...

The foreground tree was not intended to show some DOF - it's just too low res.

Ah, OK, I see. Well, that part is the "art" part and I am not really good at it. To me, a picture is good when everything that is important can be seen.

Well, last two "entries" in this series... The second image (of course rendered with a higher preset - progressive exterior in Twilight - and much bigger size) became the "winner" for a display on the site (now there is already an underground car park and a face-lifted square on top) where they will put an info board out.

To make the two buildings somewhat "different", a modified the texture on the left one a bit (added some "weathered" effect on the texture image although from this angle it is not too apparent)

This was my suggestion as it would have shown some important details

![This is the "winner" picked by the archaeologist (also some details rearranged)](/uploads/imported_attachments/agSE_test-022.jpg "This is the "winner" picked by the archaeologist (also some details rearranged)")

Yes, indeed, that would be better. But note that the population of the town at the time was mainly German and they are a pretty tidy nation!

But seriously; this file was already so huge that I eventually even had to lose the "furred" grass in front of the buildings.

When you next visit the UK try and schedule a visit to the Museum of Welsh Life. I think you would enjoy the day out. It is also free, but might not be after the next round of spending cuts.
