I got an old Mac Mini G4. I bought it second hand some years to ago as a test system when making websites.
Now I can in need of an Intel Mac to test Ruby C Extensions - but they are really hard to find cheap. Heck, even old G3 and G4 machines are expensive!

So I was thinking that I might fund a second hand Intel Mac by selling my old G4 Mac. But my problem is that I can't find the system disk. Between two moves since I bought it I've managed to lose the disk.
Is there really no way to reset the machine to fabric conditions without it?

you could delete all users, but it's not like zeroing out the HD.

Apple will send you the replacements (called fulfillment disks) for a fee. Around 20 dollars
they'll want your serial number so they can send the exact version that was originally installed.

You can also install osx via retail disks. Tiger would be good and leopard too if there's som ram in there.

Another option is to take it to a retail store if you have one nearby but I'm guessing only Oslo has one? They should reinstall for you for free but if they don't, randomly delete some system files then tell them the machine is broke 😄

if your going to sell it though, having the original disks (or official replacements) would be nice to include.

Serial number of the machine? Or the OSX system?

It has 10.4 installed, I maxed out the RAM which is only 1GB. I don't think a newer OS would be a good idea. (unless that would make it snappier...)

There are two apple stores of Eplehuset, official Apple retailers, here in Trondheim. Are you saying that there is something about an Apple product that can be done for free? They'd reset it for me?

Yes, I could check with the Apple store if they have any.

Serial number of the machine. They will be able to know exactly what disks came with it via the serial#

basically what I'm saying is just reinstall the OS. That's the only way I know of to reset the machine to factory settings and wiping out anything you or the previous owner may have put on there.

If you want it to be in the exact state as when it was originally purchased then you will need the fulfillment disks (which will probably be panter 10.3)
if you want it to just have a clean install then any version will do (except snow leopard)

the thing about apple is they make the OS and the machines so they will fix any apple computer regardless of where it was bought etc. You pretty much just need a clean install and they more likely than not will do it for free. Just call the resellers and see if they'll do it. If not, I know the apple store will.
Doing that though, you won't have any restore disks to give to the person you sell it to.

[sorry if I'm being unclear and fragmented. I'm typing from a phone]

When I bought it the seller had "reset" it to a state so when I started it I was prompted to create a new user.

Is there anything else I need to think of when I sell it?
Do I need to transfer any names etc? Serial numbers?
