Plugin Help!!! it seems so simple but....

I have been pulling my hair out! it seems so simple but i cant get it right? is there a plugin that will do the following (see pic)
its basically the same shape, but ones a different length, and they twist.
it is the end of an arm rest and i spent far too long attempting to get a plugin to work. in the end i used TIGs extrude by rails although making a rail for it to travel on was difficult, it got squashed on the was round and i had to change some straight lines to curves to get this attempt. (on right) and its really twisted around the back.....
Please help.....

nearly!!! the last one nearly got there, its the final alignment of the two shapes thats not right. maybe more tinkering.
