Lag on 64-bit windows 7 with skp7
-
Hey guys. I'm an architecture student in South Africa and have been using sketchup for about 3years now. I always used to have lag when orbiting slightly larger models, especially with shadows on. I used to think this was because of my old pc not being fast enough but after recently upgrading to an i7 processor with 8gram and nvidia quaddro fx1800 graphics card I am still having the same problem. I have turned on hardware acceleration and have the newest drivers on board... if this problem persists I fear I may have to switch to another 3d modeller but I really don't want to as i love using sketchup! Please help...

When you say 'larger models', how large are we talking? and is there any particular reason you need shadows on while your orbiting? they will always significantly slow down sketchup, even with relatively small models.

Hi Marcus,
Which 7 version do you have? 7.0 or 7.1? There was a significant performance boost with 7.1 in early Fall/Autumn.
As for your system - keep in mind that SU won't make use of more than 3.something of your memory as it is still a 32 bit application. Also, no matter how many cores you have in your system, it can only utilize 1 core (although modern CU-s like yours can slightly overclock themselves for single core apps).
There are lots of talks on this forum as well a elsewhere about 64 bit and multicore support - hopefully the SU engineers will find out something some day to upgrade the software to this newer level of modern technology but for now this is what we have.

honestly, i don't pay any attention to these types of specs when sketchup is concerned..
for the most part, sketchup runs the same on my 7year old laptop (1.33 ppc processor, 1.5gb ram, 64mb graphics) as it does on my much newer desktop and higher spec'd desktop..there are ways to deal with large models but i find the best way is modeling smart to keep the poly count low.. i do fairly large scale projects but not nearly as large as what i know some people need.. if you definitely & consistently need to have a lot of polygons in your models (say 60000+) then sure, you might need to start looking into different software.

Id add another 0 to the number of polys your recommending jeff (you on 7.1?)

ha, yeah.. you may very well be right..
i'm typically in the 30-40,000 range with no problems at all.. i've never really tested the limits except when adding 3D trees but by that point, i'm at 1million + and SU is simply horrible..

well, the model i'm currently working on is about halfway and already about 7meg... and I'm still on version 7. Will try to get my hands on the new one though-

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when you try 7.1
