      Hi,

Have to go to Zagreb in Croatia on the 28/3/10 for 6 nights with work. Travelling on my own, so i'll have lots of spare time in the evenings to explore.

Can anyone suggest things to do/see/eat/DRINK/read/climb etc.?

It's my first time in Croatia so is there any local customs I should be aware of? I've been advised not to stare (not something I have a tendency to do) and don't stand in close proximity to people in bars while queueing (which in Ireland waiting for drinks is like scrum in Rugby!)

Not looking forward to it as it'll be my first time away from my son (8 months old) but I've no choice in the matter.

        Hi rclub24,
I hope you´ll have enough time to spare to explore the city, and I am pretty sure that you´ll feel at home.
Don´t know if staring at people is polite anywhere, but it is definitely not something that applies especially to Croatia.
You might want to check http://www.zagreb-touristinfo.hr/?id=100&l=e&nav=nav7 for the drinking part, if you haven´t already.
Unfortunately, I live some 250 km away from Zagreb, otherwise I´d keep you company 😉
Bon voyage & hope you´ll have a good time there.
        Best regards,
        NT

Well, yeah, NT lives closer to me than to Zagreb for sure. 😄

I have been to Croatia a couple of times and I would not remember any particular thing to take extra care of. Certainly when abroad, you should always keep an eye on your belongings a bit more but not any way specially there.

Well, yes, and I am about to prove it one of these days...
Too bad Rich´s not traveling to Osijek, for instance. And Ilok is not that far from there... 😉

Thanks for the link NT, Hemingways sounds like it's worth a visit! Is there any particular must see attractions/structures/parks that i should take in while there? I'll have most evenings to kill and hate the thought of hanging around hotel but i will venture out to taste some local culture.

Any members who have suggestions please let me know so i can make the most of this trip! I'd hate to say i spent a week in Zagreb and have the hangover to prove it 🤢

'Bloody Bridge' has been suggested by a Hungarian work colleague.

                  @Gaieus:

Spent 6months in Budapest a few years ago helping to set up our 'sister' company. Made a lot of friends in that time and return every 2yrs to pay my respects. Thoroughly beautiful country with the most accommodating people i've ever met. So much history and tradition to absorb. Always regretted not using my time to explore it more

Well, if you happen to travel here again, pay a visit to the "South-West", too!

Well, Bloody Bridge is perhaps one thing worth visiting ( although there is no bridge there since 1898, I think ) - named after numerous conflicts during the centuries between Kaptol and Gradec, two separate boroughs.
Then, you could also visit the Upper Town, including Strossmayer's promenade, the astronomical observatory, Kamenita vrata and Kula Lotrscak ( 13th century) which is also a gallery, St. Mark's Square, with a gothic church of St. Mark in its centre, the cathedral...there are lots of places to visit there.
And if you are not that interested in history and museums ( and since you´re too early for Metallica´s concert in May ), check again http://www.zagreb-touristinfo.hr/?id=21&l=e
I am sure you´ll find something that suits your needs.
