Solidworks moving to 'the cloud'. Will SketchUp do the same?

It would make sense considering that Google are so committed to the idea of "the cloud". This is what has been announced at Solidworks World 2010;
But how would all those SU plugins work/ get managed?

I must admit, I am generally anti-cloud. A quick scan of the article, the author brushes off (at least temporarily) the concerns users may have regarding having the software cloud based.
I suppose for major applications that require frequent security fixes, or in the case of solid works, materials or engineering data, cloud basing may make some sense, especially if it could expedite information sharing. But to me, anything that removes control of the client over the software is bad. I don't need any company holding my application's functionality ransom for version upgrades, version design life limits, or at worst a service outage. It seems like a mostly profit driven move by companies; currently you get the software and all the patches for one price, until the next version. Cloud basing offers the opportunity for initial license purchase, and then monthly mandatory user fees; you no longer "own" your software. Also, this offers the opportunity for companies to have subscription "tiers"; want your analysis done first? Pay for the premium package and go to the front of the queue! Can't afford it? Wait here, please. I already feel like I'm being subscribed to death; TV, internet, phone, cellular, various online sites, and now possibly my software.
Sorry, bit of a rant, and perhaps my views of the future are a little extreme.
I'd hate to see SU go that route, too many possible negative results for me.

Jeff: Nothing is running on the Mac. Everything is on the cloud. And speaking of which, we are not going to force our customers to move to SolidWorks on the cloud. We will offer them both options and let them decide which works best for them. We will continue to develop and enhance the desktop version of SolidWorks.

Does anyone know how they made it absolutely OS-independent?
If they have not created a client application for every possible operating system, then I can only think of java, flash (=no i-phone) and browser (how without o3d)...I think technology is not yet so far that they can render the display on the server and stream it via web as a video.
