A neat little tree generator
-
I stumbled across this the other day. Baum 3D (Tree 3D...down at the bottom of the page...the full version).
It's in German but, if you press F2 when started it will offer you the option of resetting to English. It even has a rather neat leaf editor. It outputs with a largely useless (for our purposes...unless you're using Kerky) separate diffuse and transparency jpeg...and in VRML. But there are plenty of VRML translators out there...and it's easy enough to swap the jpeg for a transparent png, once in SU.The number of leaf plates is dependent upon the number of branches...but you can afford to be quite generous, as it produces an insane number of these...so you can delete them, just leaving the leaf canopy; and substitute a much simpler trunk in SU.
I've attached a sample output done in this way. It also does rather nice conifers too...although the alpha needs tidying up a bit.

Thanks for reminding me. I forgot to mention that it'll run from a folder on your Desktop...no install necessary.

And no install. Thanks for the tip, Alan.

Nice tree generator, indeed! But I noticed that it saves as .wrl. How can I convert that in something that sketchup reads? Maybe obj?
Thank you. -
You'll need to search for VRML convert, if you don't have a decent file converter already.
I was going to suggest Crossroads, but it only does VRML1...not VRML2. Nevertheless it's good for a few other formats and its free. It was also abondoned about 10 years ago so is getting increasingly hard to find. It can be found here. http://synapses.clm.utexas.edu/tools/xroads/xroads.stm so those of you that need it better get it quick and save it. You'll notice that web page hasn't been updated for 11 years.A program that does seem to do VRML2 can be found here. http://www.tb-software.com/products_2.html# I don't know the terms of the demo version, though.
