Importing 3ds Max model smooth surfaces and subtract method?
-
Hi
I've been trying to import a Max model into sketchup. I can import the model but the model is composed of smooth surfaces, is there a way I can alter (by resaving the Max file or by a method once the file is opened in Sketchup) the model so I end up with a typical default Sketchup style model? I want to further edit the model in sketchup and the issue is causing problems as I have to retrace elements before editing them? Then some parts have the smooth surfaces and others the default Sketchup modeling style?
Second question, does sketchup have a process like some other CAD programs (Rhino for example) where a shape overlapping/intersecting another can be used to subtract from the other? I have made a contoured landscape using the Sandbox> from contours and now I want to carve an embankment through the landscape model.
Thanks all!

Hi Sinan, yes all of that can be done.
The model might have been exported all smooth, so you just need to unsmooth edges. You can turn on hidden geometry ( Edit > View Hidden Geometry )and select all the faces and edges. Then turn on the soften/smooth dialog window, and with everything selected, turn the slider down to 0. It will unsmooth all edges. Now there might be some edges you want toleave as smooth. You can play with the slider, and you can also manually re-smooth edges. I prefer to use the eraser tool and hold down ctrl, which will smooth lines nicely.
The overlapping shapes can be done by intersecting the shapes. So verlap them, then select the shapes and right click on them and look for Intersect. And choose intersect with model. Then you go through and deleted the parts that you don't want to keep.
See how far you get with that. It was not very well explained, but it might be enough to get you started,
Chris
