Al Hart has a render tip floating around regarding back lighting, I thought we could expand on that slightly and have a challenge to render an IPhone, with an LCD screen.

Sure there are many other textures, but what this exercise is about is the screen, as you will notice is that it's an image and not a flat color, so there are going to be many ways of achieving this result.
I'd suggest a dark environment and maybe posing the phone in a way that the light can reflect on a surface, but that's your deal.

I chose an IPhone as it's universally recognisable, small and has a great bright display.

      Have fun.

The IPhone is a little heavy, that's because it is well smoothed for better results and the screen image is a decent resolution for render.

          My first try.

I tried to get the screen to emit light as well as reflect the light from adjacent IPhones.

I actually tried this a while back, while eagerly waiting for my ipod touch to ship.

i think the noise is due to the low quality HDRI

The only light source here is the iPhone screen:

                Hi,

I use Twilight and was wondering how to get the home screen to emit light and be reflective at the same time?

Can i set it as glass and 'Fake Emitter' simultaneously?

                Good challenge Pete 👍

Rich, why not build it just as it would be in real life? Put the glass over the emitter.

First run. Ok except the apple fell off somewhere!

                    (Updated: changed materials a little.)

I used modeling to provide the emitter / reflection combination. I moved the screen back a tiny bit and placed another "plastic" surface in front. Made the apple glow, just because. 😉

V-ray renders, studio setup, I just used the same texture from diffuse, for the emissive layer of the v-ray material.

Finally had a few minutes to throw these into the mix. Great renders all the way around from everyone!

Adam, I like the composition of Iphone_LED2.jpg. Good looking materials, except there is something odd going with the table lamp; ceramic base has some material (or surface normal) problem with the grazing angle.

Thanks Notareal. I adjusted the material and got a better result. Also added an HDRI for fill light.

Thanks Kim. I used Vray for Max with the Solid Rocks plugin for render settings. Vray light material for the LCD.

If I may, I would like to try again.
I went to sleep last night thinking of a way to render as quickly as possible without light-emitting materials, and today I woke up and I had the idea to only using projectors, a thin glass to cover the screen, and most importantly, projector must coincides exactly with the image on the screen.
Then I looked at my clock alarm and I think that this may be interesting to show the reflection in the "thin glass" over the Iphone screen, how to do this too...? I put a red light iside the alarm and a red glass on the numbers, the result you see now!
