Winter trees?

I think Tom's right. I tried some pretty extensive experiments with dynamic vegetation. You can quite easily end up with a component that is 5MB+ A good quality png file can be not far short of 1MB on its own. Have one for every season, including bare branches with snow and the whole thing gets pretty heavy.
Given that you have to choose the season anyway; and then perhaps explode the component and purge it of the unwanted seasons to save on file size, you might as well simply produce seasonal versions and then simply reload to suit. Those arial views look stunning, Pete. Are you using geometry instead of image transparency, so you can render in V-Ray or whatever? I would guess so, looking at the cast shadows in your first shots.

That is Vue I presume. The snow is just amazing.

Hi Solo,
Like I said in Twilight forum, a winter trees and shrubs pack will be very useful for me. Most of my SU projects are done for my job, the Quebec "Winter" Carnaval.
Like Alan said, for the moment I usualy use Pepe trees (very good) but it will be interesting to have more choices.
I like Bruce idea to have trees and shrub with snow on.
Put me on your list.

They look great Pete! We don't get snowy winters here so I could never be sure, though would the lower branches droop so much in winter with the absense of any weighty foliage?
Texturing these obviously has to be done out of SU due to the wrapping issue! What will you use for that! I wrapped a trunck recently with UV tools and when exported to render it spat out each face as a separate material - strange!

Try to triangulate the faces first, Richard. Until a recent update, Twilight did the same with UV Tool'ed wraps and that was the workaround. Maybe it could help with whatever you are trying to render, too.

Thanks mate!!! I'll give that a try! Sorry Pete for the off topic!

Yes! Winter trees is of use for me - here in freakkin' freezing Norway!
-
Btw, what's the theme for your next package?

The last years it's been more cold and less snow... Cold with no snow isn't that beautiful... Not like the good ol' days.
-
I was not aware of that. Last time I was in Hemsedal was 3 years ago and it was really beautiful.

It all depends where you do. How far up north, how high up in the mountains etc. But here in Trondheim the winters has been a bit weird. A couple of weeks of snow, a couple of weeks of rain where the snow melts - then it freezes again - making a solid layer of pure ice of the roads and pavements.
When I was a kid the snow would lie stable from October til April. -

i think we all perceive climatic weird changes as we grow old. i for one have recollections of having four well defined seasons in south brasil. now it is a mess: you can have them all in a day, not to speak of natural phenomena we never heard of like cyclones, tyfoons and the like.

It has to do a lot about memories.....but last winter had the biggest dump of snow in alps for about 10 years.

When I was a kid there used to be 1-2 meters with snow piling up around the house - blowing in from the surrounding fields. Used to build systems to caves and tunnels all winter. No way that has been possible the last years.
-
My memories are similar. The winters were lasting longer as well.

I haven't seen snow here for 5 or 6 years. I'm about the same latitude as northern Ontario.
