to copy the files from the hard drive BEFORE you format it.

So my hard drive started to crash and I replaced it - no problem. Managed to get all the files off the bad drive before it failed completely. Re-installed XP no problems. Then proceeded to format the 2nd drive with all the backup data on it; somehow completely overlooking the fact I needed to copy the files back to the main disk first. <Smack!>

      Hi

It's liberating in a way - there was more information than I could possibly hope to read in several lifetimes.

I could probably recover it, if I were inclined to do so.

              always remember...your wireless access password

i forgot mine, well kind of, i typed small 'i' instead of 'I' and couldn't connect. Spent 2 weeks trying to sort it out until finally i reformatted and still had same problem.

              My solution...........new laptop!!

Get it home and still no signal, then call ISP and pay for call out. Told to wait 10 working days when the missus plonks her arse down next to me one night ask 'can i try?'

8 keystrokes later i'm €835 out of pocket!

Moral of the story........when you want a new laptop follow the instructions above.....worked for me

Good thing to know, if you didn't 'hard format' your drive you probably can recover a lot of the data you've lost 😄

I've been there, several times. that's why I now have 3 HDD backups for each HDD. However don't despair: I have used R Studio http://www.r-studio.com/ on a freshly formatted HDD that had contained all my data files, which I thought I had backed up. R studio was able to recover 95% of my files. It took about 5 hours, to recover almost 500gb of data.

Dude i feel your pain too. I had a problem with my mac once.

I spoke to the apple engineers and they said I'd have to format the system and lose everything. So I did.

Turns out I didn't have to do this....uni work gone 🤢 🤢 🤢 but they did compensate me 😉

Damn Jim, I feel your pain. I had a 4 month old primary HDD crash and burn on me a few years back and I lost a sh*tload- fortunately most of my work files were backed-up, but I lost a lot of photos and God knows how many hours putting my messily backed-up folders back into some sort of order on the new HDD.

I've become increasingly paranoid about losing my files, especially my skp and V-Ray files and massive texture bitmap collection- it'd take me 5 years (and probably a nervous breakdown) to build that up again. As a result I recently burned all my work files onto DVDs which are at a friend's place and my backup HDD is stored in a secure area in our apartment building well away from my flat as I was worried that if my flat burned down I could lose my laptop and backup HDD (how ridiculous that I worry more abut losing files than I do about my safety in the event of a house fire!). I should really buy another backup HDD to keep at my friend's place- the burned DVDs are just a stop-gap measure.

                      R-Studio sounds useful.
