Are those importers deleted from the free version?

While Chris is out for a moment, allow me to answer...
Yes - you will loose these in ver. 7.1...
That's why some might find it handy to have v. 7.0 and 7.1 installed side by side... ๐Ÿ˜‰

But for a limited time, you can get the DFX/DWG import plug-in for v. 7.1...
You can find it here... ๐Ÿ˜‰

And though you already have the link to that importer, Bob, in the other topic, the answer to your question is - no, if you use Chris' "trick" above (and can run both SU 7.0 and 7.1 together), your importers in SU 7.0 will remain untouched.

            Hi

I really want to do this too, anybody tried on OS X Leopard?

            Ta

Yes, I did it on Leopard and it works. Open the finder, then go to Applications / Google SketchUp 7 and there you can right click on it and select "Copy "Google SketchUp 7." It will use the same plug-in folders and other resources found at Mac HD / Library / Application Support / Google SketchUp 7, but because the application folders changed you can go back there and run 7.0

Anyone know how to install SU 7.0 over SU 7.1, i.e. a reverse update? I want to avoid actually uninstalling SU 7.1 first as it may screw up links and paths in the V-Ray for SU plugin. Is the only way to uninstall SU 7.1. and the reinstall SU 7.0?

I ask as SU 7.1.4871 doesn't work properly with V-Ray for SU- it's very buggy.

You can do the same - just the other way round - as described in the first post I guess. Just move your current SU 7.1 install in another directory and install SU 7.0 (no guarantee though - but this "trick" was not only provided as an exceptionalway for this during the tests).

Thanks Csaba, but unfortunately that doesn't work- SU's installer detects that a newer version is already installed. I daren't try editing registry keys as I still have SU6 installed and God knows what gremlins will plague my machine if I have 3 versions of SU installed and a manually-edited registry! ๐Ÿ˜•

I guess I just have to uninstall SU7.1, reinstall SU7.0 and pray that it doesn't mess up my existing skp/V-Ray files.

I just finished reinstalling SU7.0- turned out to be much harder than I was led to expect as simply uninstalling SU7.1 and installing SU7.0 screwed up the registry so SU7.0 wouldn't run. When I finally got it installed and running, V-Ray for SU wouldn't load.

3 hours later I finally got it to work thus:

**1 ) Copy the "Google 7" folder (which contains the SU 7.1 files) from "Program Files" to "My Documents" as a backup.

                    2 ) Uninstall SU7.1 using CCleaner.

                    3 ) Run CCleaner's registry tool.

                    4 ) Run Registry Mechanic.

5 ) Manually delete the "Google 7" folder from "Program Files". Not deleting this is what screwed up the install the first two times.

                    6 ) Run CCleaner's registry tool again.

7 ) Run Registry Mechanic again.

                    8 ) Reboot.

                    9 ) Install SU7.0.

                    10 ) Reboot.

                    1. Copy backed-up SU 7.1 files (Components, Materials, Plugins, Styles) from their folder in My Docs into the newly installed "Google 7" folder in "Program Files".

                    12 ) Reinstall/Repair V-Ray for SU (it didn't load the first time).

                    13 ) Reboot.
SU and V-Ray for SU appear to be working ok now, although I haven't run the test skp/VfSU file which was crashing this morning yet. Tests will continue tomorrow.**

Of course I can't say for sure that it was SU 7.1 which was causing these problems, but it's a huge coincidence that I've never seen SU crash to desktop before. That, combined with SU7.1 freezing when orbiting is enough to rule out using it for day to day work until the cause is tracked down.

                      .
So, I keep getting Orbit crashes as well as hitting other "bugs" and now I find the new version will not load some of our larger files (150mb +). That and other probs mean we've also voted to bail out of 7.1 and return to 7.0 (7.0 download date 4/13/09). Never again...tho I've said that b4.

Is the Jackson-Method easier to do if I'm not using V-Ray and only want to save the plain old shortcuts and settings...? Components are already in separate HD files.

IOW, can I just save the Goog 7 folder, do the uninstall for 7.1, and reinstall 7.0

                      OR

do we need this registry tools CCleaner and Registry Mechanic (which sounds tricky...) to do a simpler uninstall and reinstall?

Any one try a simple switch back? Do you thk there'll be other issues?... ๐Ÿ˜ž

                      Thx for any advice.

                      /Dennis

                        Hi Dennis,

Indeed, the current V-ray for SU plugin has something to do with the buggy behaviopur of SU 7.1 but good news that the GSU Team seems to be aware of the issue and working on it (maybe even together with V-Ray?).

So I guess that means it's OK to just give the reinstall a try w/o all the techie stuff Jackson was listing...? I'll give it a try tomorrow -- what the heck.

Pls let us know when you know the bugs are gone....

As I heard, according to user feedback (wider than Beta testers), Google is working on some maintenance releases both for Windows and Mac. This is "normal" anyway with any new version (even if just a "dot" or "sub" release).

Are files created in version 7 not backward compatible to version 6?

I received a file from one of my architects and I couldn't open it. I got a message saying it's version 7 and I don't have version 7. Oddly enough, when I check for updates using the Help tab in SketchUp it tells me that I have the latest updates. I'm 99% certain I only have version 6, though, and that's what I see when I click on properties.

Anyway, is there a way to read this file w/o upgrading? I'm hesitant to upgrade now because my computer always gets bogged down when I do something like that, and I'll probably be upgrading in a few months anyway. But I need to access this file now.

                              Thanks.

No, not backwards compatible. You can save a file as version 6 from the free version of Sketchup 7. So installing SU7 free next to SU6 Pro might be your best bet.

                                Hi

Do I need to go thru the same steps as outlined in this thread to install them side-by-side, or will the free version automatically do that once it sees I have "Pro 6" installed?

version 7 won't overide your version 6, so there is no need to do everything explained here. It gets installed into its own directory, and keeps itself separate from 6.

It might not import your keyboard shortcuts from 6 correctly though, if I recall correctly. Which is annoying.
