      Hi from Chiangmai

      OK, I draw a square.
      I make it a component.
I option/move (on Mac) to make say 16 equally spaced copies.
I now take the push/pull, click on one rail, then stretch all squares upwards simultaneously into shall we say a railing of freestanding rails.
Now I want to lengthen say the two railings one in from the ends. But when I take the push/pull to one of the two rails in question, both of which I've highlighted, it comes up with the "no entry" sign.....cannot do.
I would also like to join all the individual rails with crosspieces at top and bottom....actually with the two longer ones sticking out at the bottom. What would be the most efficacious way.

      Any help greatly appreciated.

        railing example

Is this what you're trying to do?

        Steps:

        • Create 1 railing (4"x4"x2')
        • Make it a component
        • Copy it x16
        • Select the 1st and last rail components and scale them longer than the others
        • Draw the top piece (4"x2") on the top of any of the rail components
        • Push/pull it to touch the 1st and last rail
        • Make it a component
        • Copy it to the bottom of the rails

        Regards - Martin

Oops - I forgot - If the rails are more complicated in design you could make them dynamic components so that they scale correctly and stretch in the right place.

            Hi Martin thanx so much

it's really late here in Thailand and I've got to get to bed right this minute!
            Hang on.

It's actually a teak bedhead made of 50mm square rails about 600mm long. Along the top will also be another 50mm piece, 1800mm long, the width of the mattress. At the bottom perhaps a thinner piece maybe 50 x 25mm would be the joiner as it won't be seen. I would like two or three of the rails to stick further downwards to bolt onto the bed frame proper. I was thinking of the 2nd rail and the second last rail, and maybe the middle rail if I make an odd number. Sticking down say 200mm.

I guess the important thing i need is how to alter individual copies of a component, (can I alter say just three, being able to alter them simultaneously as I did when working with copies of the original simultaneously......in other words can I sort of de-componentize). Though for now being able to alter individually would be a start.
I notice your left hand longer post is an individual entity whereas the right one alters along with the whole row of rails. Bemused...

It's lovely to see the finished product but it's also the principle I's like to know.

thanx again and read you tomorrow

If you have made 16 copies of the same component but decide to make three of them different, you can select those three, right click and choose "Make unique" from the context menu. Now they will be different component definitions (from the originals) and if you edit one of them, the other two of the three will also reflect the changes but the rest 13 won't.

You can make certain, limited changes to a component instance without affecting other instances of the same component definition but they are indeed limited. Scaling, rotating, moving, even texturing (from outside) are allowed but be prepared for instance that if you have textured the faces inside the component definition already, you cannot texture it from outside and if you scale such a textured component, the texture will also scale with it.

So it's indeed rather limited. Using unique components will however let you model something to a certain extent (until they are identical) and go on making the differences only from the point you need it (and make some unique).

Would you bear with me Gaieus?

I make a square, make it a component, copy it 16x, pull it upwards.
Then I highlight the 3 rails i want to lengthen by pushing option on my Macbook as I select them.
I then right click and "make unique".
                BUT
As soona as I go to click the push/pull all the highlighting of the 3 rails disappears and if I continue to take the push/pull cursor to a rail I get a no entry sign.

                Could we start there please?

                thanks Cheeryble

That's it; there are certain operations that can only be performed on faces (like PushPull, Offset and such) and to use them, you need to be in the editing context of whatever (in this case the component). Simply double click on any of the instances and PushPull.

Cheeryble - you have to be inside/editing a component to be able to use the push/pull tool otherwise you will see the 'denied' icon. You can only edit one component or group at once.

In Chapter 8, The Apartment's Furniture, we make a bed. (Actually, a reproduction of a 1905 Craftsman magazine bed plan.) It's here:
