The last thing you see on this earth before a Jeep hits you?

Death by Audi?

Pictures of atoms?

Looks a bit like a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon consisting of 5 linearly-fused benzene rings ?

You beat me to it - I was just going to say the same thing.

Hint: I saw it on PopSci's front page yesterday...

Probably something that we will have inside our computers in a few years time?
-
Possibly, but it's better known for it's possible uses in other areas.

Nicely aligned in a matrix. looks like Carbon atoms to me.
-
Well spotted alan.
Carbon nano tunes pictured with an atomic force microscope: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8225491.stm

At least I think it's neither anthracene nor tetracene...
Maybe you think about something that interacts with sun light?
-
Wow. Just read about atomic force microscopes. That is seriously impressive technology...imaging something by wiggling a tuning fork at it and picking up the disturbances caused by nearby atoms.
-
And also impressive the last paragraph: combining the two techniques. If they can map the structure and also distinguish the elements, I would not need anymore to struggle with those spectra:
That's like if you take a single molecule in your hands, touch it and feel the structure.
