The vernacular architecture of southern Louisiana and Mississippi are built up off the ground, frequently with substantial masonry pillars supporting a classical porch above. Sometimes the space below is used for a garage or other minor uses. This seems to be the universal design solution for flood prone areas, until modern man decided technology can conquer nature.

I had the pleasure of meeting this guy! Probably one of my all time favourite architects, master of the vernacular.
