Hello! I discovered this great site yesterday and wish I had found it a long time ago. There is a lot of great stuff here.

I've been using SU for about 4 years now, but I recently purchased a new laptop and SketchUp 7 Pro. Previously I have been running it on my work computer with no issues, but I am having some issues running on my home computer.

Right from the start there was a lot of performance lag on my model. (I started it on my work computer.) I reduced its size considerably and performance got better. However there was still a lot of lag. I started a new model to see if I could identify ways to streamline SU. Right from the start I noticed that I had no selection box. By turning off the darkened profile lines performance also got better.

I've since found this website and turned off HA which gave me the selection box. I've tried the most recent drivers for my video card, older drivers, made other software updates but I can't seem to figure it out. The only thing I haven't tried is re-installing SU.

      My Specs:
      Dell Studio 1535
Intel Core Duo 2.0GHz 4GB RAM 360GB HHD
Video: Mobile Intel Express Chipset 965

I understand the integrated graphics card is not ideal but I would like to think that being a relatively new computer with 3d capability that SU would run better. Any helpful hints, settings I've not figured or anything else to get me up and running would be greatly appreciated!

That's unfortunately the answer. these integrated chipsets are NOT with true 3D capabilities. They are cool for browsing the internet and watching videos but that's all.
Like with integrated sound cards; okay for listening to music from your laptop stereo speakers but if you want a home "studio", you'll need to install a dedicated sound card.

Many things are advertised as having 3D capabilities, but it all depends on what your 3D use is.
What's important for Sketchup are OpenGL compatibility. Many laptops have poor OpenGL support.

Still avoid Vista and ATI Radeons because of weak OGL performance.

Vista in conjunction with ATI? Or both separately?
I've been using Vista and Windows7 with SU had have had no performance issues.

there is less to no OpenGL based 3D capability with shared low-end GPUs as e.g. the Intel GMA series etc.

if you wanna make a living from your SU results, drop this notebook and buy something really capable with at least a dedicated nVidia GeForce video subsystem or better a nVidia Quadro FX in connection with Win XP Pro x32 as e.g. the Dell XPS or Precision series (w/ XP Downgrade).

Still avoid Vista and/or ATI Radeons because of weak OGL performance.

That is what I was afraid of. Thanks for your help. Unfortunately I am trying to find a job based in part on my ability to model in SketchUp so I may need to invest in the home desktop/media centerI've been wanting. πŸ˜„ I've always been supporter of Nvidia over ATI anyway.

                Thanks again!
