      Hello Everyone
We have been working in SketchUp for a while now and we are just begining to delve into Dynamic Components πŸ‘Š . Already We need to ask the more experienced minds of this forum some questions. We are currently working with an adjustable Tv hanger. So we thought we could use dynamic components to create a single hanger with preset options for the different adjustments.Tv Hangers.jpg
We got as far as creating these different adjustments for the hanger and then discovered that when we set one hanger to a specific setting using the component settings window all other hangers in the file would become the same. We were wondering if there is a way to have each component at its own specific adjustment without having 20 different dynamic components. Any help would be appreciated.
      Thanks,
      TeamSDA

It should work so that you can change them all independently of eachother.

I've included a model that hopefully shows this. Let me know if its not working as expected or if you have more questions,

Thank You, this is close to what we are trying to accomplish. The only problem with the file you posted was that whenever we set the slider Cubes to a new setting another dynamic component would be made. We have built extensive libraries of components, so when we are working with a file we would like to have only one dynamic component instead of a bunch of them. We understand if this is just not possible but we wanted to ask the SketchUcation community just to make sure.

          Thanks,

If i remember correctly SU makes a new component each time you alter the dynamic component, so to answer your question: i dont think it's possible to have a DC that changes and doesnt generate new definitions.

Any reason why this is a problem?

The problem is that we have large libraries of components and a bunch of DC's would needlessly clutter up the file even more. The other issue is that we track the number of specific components we use, and then compare those numbers to our actual inventory. So having 10 DC's representing one real life item in our inventory makes our lives harder when we have to generate reports from SketchUp to compare with our inventory. Anyway, thanks to all for helping to clarify this situation. Hopefully in the future this will be resolved. Till then we will wait πŸŽ‰

                Thanks,

I think it's possible to modify the reporter so I'll count the DC variations as one type...

That would be a great. But we have only begun to learn about DC's, we have not had the time to learn more about how the reporting function works, except that it looks like a lot of complex spreadsheet functions. We are currently working on a large project and do not have the time to learn how reporting works. Right now we are not using the reporting tool, but we will in the near future. So for now we just want to keep our component libraries clean. We will be coming back in the near future with more questions about how the reporting function works.

                    Thanks,

SketchUp tracks components in a model differently than components in your components folder. If you import one of your DC's into SketchUp and then make a few copies and change them, you will end up with different components in your "In Model" component list. But it won't change anything in your actual component library.....if that helps.

And if you need to select all DC's of one type, you can use my Selection Toys plugin.
